As the 18th of December 2021 approaches the Museum will be celebrating six decades of telling the stories of the Military Communications and Electronics Branch. On the 18th of December 1961 the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals Museum was created. The location of the first Museum was housed in the lower level of the Forde Building at CFB Kingston. The Forde Building is the headquarters building for the Canadian Forces School of Communications and Electronics (CFSCE).
What started as a museum dedicated to the history of the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals (RCCS) later expanded when the Military Communications and Electronics Branch was created by the Unification Act of 1968. This act led to various occupational branches being established to link related occupations from the Army, Air Force, and Navy into cohesive professional groups who shared similar functions. The Military Communications & Electronics Branch merged the Canadian Army’s Royal Canadian Corps of Signals (RCCS), the Royal Canadian Air Force’s Telecommunications Wing, and the Royal Canadian Navy’s Signals Intelligence Division into a unified force tasked to enable Command & Control and Electronic Warfare capabilities for the Canadian Armed Forces.
As time passed the museum grew too large for its home at CFSCE and the current Museum structure was created with a grand opening in spring 1996. Members of the Military C and E Branch family were able to raise the funds necessary to build the new museum. Twenty-five years later the museum is still here and in 2014 an addition was added to the gallery space.
To celebrate six decades of telling the stories of the many people who have, are and will be a part of the Military Communications and Electronics Branch family the museum is holding a virtual concert to recognize this momentous achievement. While this may not have been how we envisioned the 60th Anniversary it is hoped that everyone will enjoy the music with this Covid-19 safe activity. Wishing everyone a happy and safe December 18th! The Concert can be found on https://cmcen-rcmce.ca/ , https://www.candemuseum.org/, The Museum Facebook site or the Foundation website on December 18th.
