Come Explore the KMFRC Sensory Room

The Kingston Military Family Resource Centre held their 30th anniversary celebrations on 23 March 2024 at CFBKingston. Participants were able to take part in activities held at the centre, including face painting, the sensory room, and a 50/50 draw.

Did you know that the KMFRC has an incredible Sensory Room available for booking exclusively by CAF members, veterans, and their families? Are you curious about what a Sensory Room is and if this space is right for you? A Sensory Room is an open-ended, interactive space that can be beneficial to all ages. These multi-sensory environments offer individuals with cognitive differences and other challenges the opportunity to enjoy and control a variety of sensory experiences. Providing a stimulating environment can develop or reactivate senses of hearing, sight, smell, and touch. These environments can also help to improve coordination and motor development, develop a sense of cause and effect, and can result in more calmness. Some features of our Sensory Room include a bubble tube to promote visual stimulation, weighted items to encourage nervous system regulation, and a mindfulness area to support mental wellness. The room also contains interactive panels, fibre optic light displays, and a two soft spaces. The Sensory Room is accessible for those who use mobility aids such as wheelchairs, walkers, or other assistive devices.

With summer break approaching, this is a great opportunity to take advantage of this fun and engaging space! Families who are interested in using the space are encouraged to connect with a Military Family Navigator to receive an orientation. Following orientation, families are free to book the space for 1-hour blocks through our Information Services Assistants by calling 613-541-5010 ext. 5195 or by email at kmfrc@kmfrc.com
