Family Day, which will be celebrated on February 21st this year, is an opportunity to bond with and learn more about our loved ones. Although social restrictions remain in place as I write this, there are several ways for families to spend quality time together.
Nurture creativity
Depending on your children’s ages and interests, as well as what you have available at home, family fun could vary from crafts to coding, finger-painting to filming, sensory play to STEAM challenges (science, technology, engineering, arts and math).
Get connected
One positive aspect of screen time is the chance to interact with family and friends who live elsewhere. Here are a few options:
- Printing the same activities. Military-themed puzzles are included in this collection from the Together We Stand Foundation.
- Choosing programs to watch concurrently. Broadway productions can be rented online, with free week-long subscriptions available at Broadway HD; movies and TV shows can be viewed simultaneously through TeleParty
- Playing virtual games together. See Jackbox Games for tips.
Nourish your body and mind
Your family might like to prepare a new recipe, enjoy an educational game or podcast, or devote time to mindfulness. Another idea is to do a self-guided walking tour together. An app such as GPS My City will provide you with local maps and tips.
Wishing all families in our community a happy and healthy Family Day!
