Canadian households spend about 30% of their food budget on meals and snacks purchased from full-service restaurants, fast-food outlets and cafeterias, as well as refreshment stands, snack bars, vending machines, mobile canteens, caterers and chip wagons. The types of meals purchased from these establishments have been associated with an increase in calories, sodium, sugars, and saturated fat. Fewer Canadians are making meals from basic ingredients, and many are reliant on highly processed products that require fewer or different food skills. The Kingston HP team is very excited to partner with KFL&A Public Health to enhance the Strengthening the Forces Weight Wellness Lifestyle Program (WWLP) by adding 3 You’re the Chef (YTC) cooking classes into the 7-week WWLP workshop beginning February 2020.
In the fall of 2019, the Kingston Health Promotion (HP) team became trained facilitators in the YTC Cooking program, through KFL&A Public Health. The YTC program teaches basic cooking and food safety skills. Participants apply these learned skills to create a variety of delicious, nutritious and simple recipes. The cooking session also provides time for the group to sit down and enjoy the food they made with an opportunity to take home leftovers.
Join your local Health Promotion Team to focus on making better food choices, being more active and cooking nutritious meals in the kitchen.
