Health Promotion May Health and Wellness Challenge 2019

Who are all those people in blue shirts and what are they doing? Well, they are the dedicated May Challengers and their mission is to Find Camo in the Garrison this May!

Throughout the month of May, over 150 participants have challenged themselves to;

  • Explore health at CFB Kingston,
  • Find Camo through weekly clues, and;
  • Fill their passport by using the Healthy Choices daily checklist.

Making individual healthy choices and attending events throughout the month earned participants points towards winning one of the awesome grand prizes. There were so many great activities to attend this year!

Every Wednesday has been an opportunity to discover a new walking route over lunch. We’ve explored a route around Junior Ranks to 33 Health Services and out to the Outdoor gym for a workout led by Fitness and Sports Instructor, Jo-Anie Moreau. We have ventured up the Fort Henry Hill, through the PMQ’s and to CANEX for a BeneFit Healthier Choice snack. We have toured around the KMFRC and the Yacht Club, while checking out the community gardens. Finally, we roamed out to the RMC peninsula to end the month with a great view of campus and Lake Ontario.

Every Friday the Challengers have been decoding clues to find Camo, the PSP mascot, at various CF Morale and Welfare Services (CFMWS) on base. The first week Challengers found Camo playing a game of corn hole at the Garrison Golf & Curling Club. Camo challenged everyone to play while using Health Promotion Fatal Vision Impairment googles and discussing the effects of impairment and the benefit of Addiction Free Living. The following week Challengers found Camo making smart financial decisions at SISIP. Camo challenged everyone to play ‘The Price is Right’ with Health Promotion to bridge the gap between physical, mental and financial health. On the third week, the clue led the group to the Communications and Electronics Museum where Challengers completed a scavenger hunt through the exhibits that led to Camo. The final clue sent Challengers to the Bowling Alley where Camo wanted to have a Bowl-Off!

The KMFRC have also co-hosted two great May Challenge themed Creative Tuesday’s. Our first creation was a clever menu board using the glass of a picture frame and a white board marker. We discussed healthy meal planning, Canada’s Food Guide, and Health Promotion’s Weight Wellness program. The second creation was a ‘nuts and bolts’ key chain for a gym locker and we discussed Health Promotion’s Injury Reduction program in collaboration with Fitness and Reconditioning. Did you know? All Health promotion programs are available for Military, Veterans, DND staff, and Family Members!

 Attending these events and committing to making personal healthier choices takes a lot of commitment and hard work. We celebrated these achievements with an exceptional plant based lunch at the SSM featuring Beyond Meat burgers and mixed greens. Having meatless meals is a great way to improve health and discover new, exciting foods!

Congratulations to all of the May Challengers, you did amazing! Like the PSP Facebook page to see who will take home the Fitbit 3, Click and Grow Garden, and the Google Home.

A huge thank-you goes out to all of the May Challenge sponsors this year, your services are incredibly beneficial to the health of the community. Thank you, PSP, SISIP, CANEX, KMFRC, GG&CC, C&E Museum, Community Recreation, and Fitness and Sports.
