Purpose
To assist Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) families with educational development and employment opportunities, while helping them access community networks.
The past year saw the start of some amazing national programs and initiatives from the Department of National Defence (DND) and Military Family Services (MFS). The Military Spouse Casual Inventory for priority hiring pools for military spouses started with contracts on the Base. The available roles ranged from clerical work and office administration, to cleaning, food services, and language teaching. It’s an excellent way for spouses to gain experience, network, and have employment while they settle into their new community.
Military Family Services (MFS) launched the Spousal Employment Network, an online employment database for spouses across Canada. As well, the MFS Spousal Employment Network hosted two Virtual Career Fairs in November 2018 and March 2019, featuring CAF friendly national employers and the participation of over 300 CAF spouses per fair. MFS also contracted Career Cycles to provide individualized online career services to CAF spouses through the Career Path program and monthly, “Work It Out” webinars.
We also facilitated three successful skills based Employment Workshops presented by Community Partners, which strengthened partnerships, equipped attendees with new skills, and helped introduce the Employment Services Worker to the community. The workshops included Resume Writing, presented by Diane Sabourin of ACFOMI, Job Fair Readiness, presented by Kristina Pernar of the KMFRC, and Cover Letter Writing, presented by Ophelia Rigault of KEYS. The Employment Services Worker also teamed up with the Volunteer Services Worker to facilitate a two part Toastmasters workshop with twenty-two participants. After much positive feedback, we look forward to monthly employment workshops in the next fiscal year.
