Over the past year, we’ve certainly learned to do things locally, but even as the world starts re-awakening this summer, there are still lots of staycation ideas you might want to try. The KMFRC staff picks for staycations will hopefully inspire you.

My favourite staycation idea is getting all local ingredients and using them for a yummy picnic at one of our beautiful parks. My top 2 parks for picnics are Confederation park and Kingston Mills.
Some ideas for local ingredients:
- Panchancho Bakery or Bread and Butter Bakery
- Fruition Berry farm (pick your own strawberries)
- Wilton or Black River Cheese factory
- local farms for eggs or veggies (i.e. Salt of the Earth or Fat Chance Farmstead)
- The County Cider Company
- Barriefield Meat Market

My favourite stay-cation is Sandbanks. It is quite the trek to get there but so worth it.
My other hidey-spot is Big Sandy Bay Beach on Wolfe Island. You get the adventure of crossing the ferry (think holiday cruise), travel on the island (think PEI or Hawaii), hike from the parking lot to the beach (think trekking in the Amazon), and the beach itself (think ocean).

Favourite “stay-cation” idea pre-covid was to take in a local attraction and be a tourist in your own city; Trolley Tour, Haunted Walk, Thousand Island Boat Cruise or dinner cruise. Now with restrictions and social distancing it is fun to find a new food truck, or get take out at a local restaurant, and then to go sit by the water and enjoy!

I love vacations and exploring new places, but one of the nicest things about coming back home after you’ve been away is sleeping in your own bed. So a staycation is the best of both worlds. I love exploring Kingston as a “tourist.” The perfect day for me is roaming around downtown with my wife. We pop into shops, spend time enjoying the patios and walk through areas we haven’t discovered yet. We take lots of pictures and have long chats. And at the end of the day, we get to sleep in our own bed.
