KMFRC Volunteer of the month: Courtney Whaley

The Family Networks are part of a Canadian Military Family Resource Centre program that connects Military families with each other, the Member’s unit, and community resources, which helps families deal with the challenges associated with deployment, separation and relocation.

The Family Network includes a Unit Liaison Representative and a Volunteer Family Representative, who work with the KMFRC to offer social, informational, care-taking, networking, and morale-building activities. Together, the Unit Rep, Family Rep and KMFRC help families to successfully deal with their unique stressors, while reinforcing overall resilience in navigating the military lifestyle.

This month’s volunteer spotlight focuses on a fierce advocate for Military families, and those who often find themselves misunderstood by society. She has participated on the Kingston PRIDE planning committee, and co-founded Together We Conquer Mountains, whose mission is to empower transgender families, children and youth to live life surrounded by support from those who have come before them, lifted by timely and adequate resources when needed, strengthened through education, and protected fully by law.

I’d like to introduce you to Courtney Whaley, a KMFRC Family Network Rep.

Tell us about yourself: Where you’re from originally, how long you’ve been associated with the Military community…married, kids, pets, number of postings…tell us anything you’d like to share!

I am originally from Belleville, Ontario. I have been connected to the Military life for about 10 years. I am married, with a family made up of 3 children & 3 dogs. Over the past 10 years, I have experienced 3 postings: Trenton, ON; Gander, NL; and now Kingston, ON.

What do you do when you aren’t volunteering?
I like to write on my personal blog https://justthestork.blog/, work on expanding my new photography studio and business (https://www.facebook.com/Courtney-Whaley-Photography-327144067832410/), and living a healthier lifestyle.

What is your personal philosophy on life?
Always be a work in progress, and be kind.

What made you decide to volunteer with the KMFRC Family Networks?
I experienced my first deployment after a new posting and had no family or friends nearby. I have never felt so alone in my life! Kim Mills showed up at my door one day to drop off some items, and she mentioned that she thought she might have the perfect volunteer position for me, since I seemed “optimistic and cheery.” Now I am the CFJSR Family Rep.

What strategies do you think Military spouses can utilize to remain resilient during the holiday season, when many are facing deployment-related separation?
Step out of your comfort zone, and accept that invitation. Invite yourself to someone’s house, ask for help, surround yourself with loved ones when you can, and make those new connections.

What do you want for Christmas this year?
A money tree!

I am told this is not a “thing” *eye roll* – so I am being wishful, and hoping I get to give the most precious Christmas news to two expecting Dads on Boxing Day…i.e., that I’ll be pregnant with their child (I’m a surrogate)…fingers crossed now!

Favorite Christmas song?
I am not a fan of Christmas music, but I am also the furthest from a Grinch! If I have to choose… “Baby, It’s Cold Outside”.

Real tree or artificial?
Fake. Pre-lit. I am scared my house will catch on fire…and I don’t want my dogs peeing on a real one!

Favorite holiday memory?
My first Christmas as a Mom.
