Did you know that museums contribute both economically, culturally and emotionally to the wellbeing of the community? Museums are educational institutions that support lifelong learning and offer events, programmes and dedicated spaces that give access and educational opportunities at every stage of life. Museum Collections exist to be held in trust for the benefit of the whole of society.
“May is Museum Month” is an uplifting opportunity to celebrate our military heritage and culture as well as the contributions of the museum to our community. While the Military Communications and Electronics Museum is closed to the public to ensure physical distancing and to help fight the spread of COVID-19, the museum has continued to engage audiences online through Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube and participate and create off-site programs like the March of the Museums.
This month, the museum will be celebrating two special days: The 25th Anniversary of the opening of the current museum on May 17, 2021 and International Museum Day on May 18, 2021. To celebrate the Anniversary of the opening of the current Military Communication and Electronics Museum in a socially distanced way the C&E Museum Foundation has created an eight-hour Streamathon featuring interviews with multiple veterans of the C&E Branch. The event will be broadcast on https://www.facebook.com/events/173099087596661 and you can order tickets at https://www.mmfoundation.ca/streamathon-tickets if you want to donate to support the museum.
This year’s International Council of Museums theme on May 18th is “The Future of Museums: Recover and Reimagine.” As part of reimagining our future, we would like you to celebrate your past visits to the museum! If you have any photos or videos or stories of a visit to the museum in the last 25 years (or longer!), please share them on our Facebook site under the hashtag #MCEM25 for your chance to win some fabulous prizes.
At the end of “May is Museum Month”, we will share all entries as a slide show and post to all our social media locations. Good luck and happy “May is Museum Month”!
