Summer Greetings from the Base Commander

We have made it to the half-way point of this particularly challenging year, and I’m proud to say that our team, and our community, has risen to meet those challenges head on!

We may have started the year in lockdown, but just last week we’ve seen the province move to Stage 2 of its reopening plan, with Stage 3 expected to be just a couple weeks away. As restrictions eased, I hope you all took advantage of the Canada Day holiday, and were able to safely enjoy some time with a few friends and family. We must remain vigilant against COVID-19, but we must also look after our mental health and our relationships.

The progress we’re seeing is in no small part due to the hard work of our health care team and the efforts of our vaccination clinic. I am thrilled and grateful to see the uptake of vaccinations in our lines, with over 95% of local CAF members being vaccinated. I’m also happy to see that the province has opened vaccination up to everyone 18 years of age or older, as this means more vaccines, more rapidly, for out civilian staff. Soon we will be able to return to a more normal work life

As we move into the next few months of summer, be sure to take advantage of the many programs and activities put on by the Personnel Support Programs (PSP) staff. Rent some gear from Sports Store or Arrowhead Beach and spend some time in nature with your family and friends. With many of the base clubs operating again in limited capacity, there are many opportunities to socialize and meet new people who share your interests. Take time to welcome those that have been posted in this APS and last, as they’ve likely had a hard time growing their social networks during the pandemic.

I recognize that some of you may be feeling a level of exhaustion and burn out, as this past year has put a strain on resources, including you. I encourage each of you to take some time off this summer to recoup, recharge, and refocus. If you’re struggling and need additional support, I implore you to reach out for assistance. We need to all be aware and understanding of the challenges our teammates may be facing, so look after each other and have a good summer.
