The KMFRC will be hosting a Month of the Military Child Celebration on April 28th from 5:30-7:30 at the Spiritual Fitness Center (33 Lundy’s Lane). The event will include games and activities for families, snacks, and door prizes! A very limited number of Month of the Military Child t-shirts will be available for purchase at the event for $15 dollars each. All proceeds from the purchase of a t-shirt will go towards KMFRC child and youth services. Your contribution positively impacts families within the military community, and we thank you for your continued support. We encourage everyone to wear their teal shirts (or any teal shirts!) for a group photo opportunity to show our Kingston CAF community support for our amazing and resilient military children and youth. The group photo will take place at 6:30.
Teal Up day is April 28th. This campaign started April 2021 in Shilo, Manitoba. Shilo Military Family Resource Center Youth Programs heads Shannon Chapman (Youth Programs Coordinator) and Stephanie Laviolette (Youth Programs Facilitator) were brainstorming new and innovative ways to celebrate Month of the Military Child. In the process, they came across “Purple Up” a popular celebration for recognizing how resilient military children are in the Unites States. This is what sparked Stephanie Laviolette’s idea for Teal Up, a celebration day for Canadian military children. Both felt it was important that Canadian military children have their own day to celebrate as they should be proud to be a military child! The colour teal was chosen because the colour includes all branches of the Military (Blue for Air Force, Green for Army and Blue/White for Navy).
This year the KMFRC asked our local CAF members to submit a word that sums up what it means to be a part of a military family. We were overwhelmed with amazing responses, and the words that were submitted were used to create our very own teal t-shirt that not only represents military children and youth, but our local CAF families!
We encourage everyone to wear teal on April 28th, 2022. Like wearing pink for Anti-Bullying Day wearing teal is a visual representation to recognize all military children’s resiliency. Whether you wear your own teal shirt or purchase one we encourage everyone show their support. We look forward to seeing you at our celebration!
