How many times have you spent ringing in the New Year and resolving to improve your health and fitness in the coming year? And how many times have you failed to follow through?
Fall, on the other hand, is a great time to “fall back” into fitness, set a new fitness goal and start a new program. Starting in the fall affords you the time to create a solid foundation and healthy habits before the holiday season begins and the winter months kick off. As the seasons change, take the time to rethink and restart.
The leaves are turning, but you can turn over your own new leaf and make some better decisions for your health’s sake. Do not let the fact that you may be bundling up soon steer you away from the need for exercise.
Here are some great ways to “fall” into fitness this season:
- Take advantage of the cooler weather. These months are a great time to exercise outdoors and enjoy cooler temperatures. Try throwing the Frisbee around or playing a vigorous game of fetch with your dog; go hiking or cycling amongst the beautiful fall leaves.
- Discover park trails and take in some new scenery, whether you are walking, hiking or biking. If the snow starts to fall early, try cross-country skiing or snowshoeing.
- Raking leaves or doing some fall outdoor yard work is a great way to get the heart pumping and those calories burning.
- Considering learning a new skill or trying a new activity? Fall is the perfect time to work on a new physical skill. If you learn something new now, by next summer, you will have mastered the skill. Try a Yoga class. Maybe CrossFit or another group exercise class, such as indoor cycling have always been on your list of activities to try. Learn to swim or perfect your stroke as public pools start to open back up again. If it does not challenge you, it will not change you.
- Rejuvenate yourself. Fall is a great time to rejuvenate not only the body, but also the mind and spirit. Get a massage after your run. Learn to meditate. Take an art class. Treat yourself not just with exercise but other activities that promote physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellness.
You have a chance to turn over a new leaf with every passing minute. The time is now. Fall back into your fitness routine; you will be glad you did!
