Understanding Addiction and Mental Health workshop at the KMFRC

The Kingston Military Family Resource Centre (KMFRC) is proud to present an engaging and informative workshop, Understanding Addiction and Mental Health, tailored specifically for military family members. This important session will take place on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the KMFRC.

Addiction and mental health challenges are issues that can deeply affect individuals and families alike. This workshop aims to shed light on the complexities of addiction and its profound impact on mental health, equipping military families with the knowledge and resources to better understand and support their loved ones.

Military families often face unique challenges, including frequent relocations, deployments, and the stress of military life. These factors can amplify the effects of addiction and mental health struggles, making it even more crucial to have a strong support network and access to tailored resources.

This two-hour workshop will cover essential topics, including:

  • The Concept of Addiction: Exploring what addiction is, how it develops, and its connection to mental health challenges.
  • The Personality of the Addict: Understanding the behaviours, traits, and underlying issues often associated with addiction.
  • Types of Addictions Across Age Groups: Examining common addictions in children, youth, and adults, including substance use and behavioural addictions such as gaming and social media.
  • Impact of Addiction: Analyzing how addiction affects not only the individual but also their family, friends, and community.
  • Recovery Programs: Highlighting services available in the Canadian community and local Kingston area to support those struggling with addiction.
  • Family Rehabilitation Programs: Offering insights into resources designed to help families cope, heal, and thrive alongside their loved ones on the path to recovery.

The Understanding Addiction and Mental Health workshop will provide a safe and welcoming space for family members to:

  • Gain knowledge and awareness about addiction and its root causes.
  • Learn practical strategies for addressing addiction and promoting recovery.
  • Connect with local and national resources for ongoing support.
  • Share experiences and build a sense of community with others who understand the challenges of military life.

We invite all military family members to attend this workshop and take the first step toward creating a healthier, more resilient family dynamic. By understanding addiction and its impact, you can become a source of strength and support for your loved ones, helping them navigate the road to recovery with compassion and confidence.
