Understanding Divorce and Separation: A Workshop to Support Families

Divorce and separation can profoundly impact families, especially when children are involved. The decision to end a relationship is never easy, but when couples struggle to maintain a healthy and supportive environment, separation may become the necessary step toward achieving psychological well-being. These challenging transitions often bring conflicts and emotional strain that affect not only the spouses but also the children, who may struggle to cope with the changes.

To support families during this difficult time, the Kingston Military Family Resource Centre (KMFRC) is offering a two-part workshop focused on divorce and separation. The first session will be held on Saturday, November 16, 2024, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., with a follow-up session on Saturday, January 18, 2025, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. These workshops aim to address the unique challenges faced by families going through separation and will provide valuable resources and strategies for both parents and children.

The program includes separate workshops tailored for parents and children. For parents, the focus will be on understanding the emotional and psychological effects of divorce, learning effective communication techniques, and finding ways to minimize the impact on their children. Meanwhile, the children’s workshop will create a safe space for young participants to express their feelings, understand the changes in their family, and learn coping strategies suited to their age. The content of the session for children is geared towards those in the 6-12 age range, however if you have a child outside of this range and they are interested in participating, please reach out to us.

Led by the Mental Health Team and skilled Military Family Navigators from the KMFRC, these workshops are designed to help families navigate the complexities of divorce in a healthy and supportive manner. Don’t miss this opportunity to gain insights and practical tools that can make a difference in your family’s well-being.
