What to do on Family Day

February 15 is Family Day. Unfortunately, a number of activities have been cancelled this year to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Here are some ideas for spending quality time with your family and creating new memories.
Kingston is fortunate to have so much green space. Why not take advantage of your day off to explore a conservation area such as Little Cataraqui Creek or Parrott’s Bay? Remember to bring seeds to feed the birds if you decide to explore Lemoine Point. The chickadees will eat right out of your hand. For more information, please see https://crca.ca. You can also explore a small area of the Base during the CFB Kingston Family Day Outdoor Scavenger Hunt; solve riddles, find clues, and you could have the chance to win prizing including a Nintendo Switch. Click here for more information.

Going sliding with the family is always fun. Try out these hills:

  • Fort Henry Hill
  • Princess St. and Portsmouth Ave.
  • Lions Civic Gardens at Cataraqui Mall
  • Summerhill at Queen’s University

Looking for a family “getaway?” How about having a theme dinner in honour of a foreign country? You can make a typical dish from that country, do some research on its customs, listen to local music, and so on. Don’t feel like cooking? Kingston is lucky to have a great variety of restaurants. Why not take the opportunity to boost the local economy by ordering takeout from a restaurant that serves food from the country you’re interested in? For a complete list of restaurants, see lovekingston.ca

The KMFRC LPA, Child and Youth Programs and Services Facebook page contains a number of suggestions for family activities. There are DIY ideas, short videos, songs and more. The Kingston Frontenac Public Library’s YouTube channel also has various activity ideas.

Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada in Toronto provides feeds from four different webcams so you can watch various species of fish in real time. Its photo galleries also have a lot of information about different kinds of fish. You can also view the animals at Georgia Aquarium on nine different webcam feeds.

I hope these suggestions will help you enjoy the day with your family.
Happy Family Day! 😊
