Clutter Control: Dealing with a Messy Co-Worker

Dear CCMS,

Our section works in an open-concept office style and my colleague is so disorganized and messy. Her stuff is starting to clutter my space, which impacts my ability to work efficiently. I want to speak to her about it, but I’m afraid to approach the subject. Can you help?

It sounds as though you are quite frustrated and the current workspace is impacting your productivity.  Approaching a colleague about a challenging issue can be difficult for many reasons, yet not expressing how the clutter is impacting you may lead to escalating behaviours that could further impact your working relationship.

What is causing you to be afraid to approach her?  Is there a history of contentious interactions?  Is it a behavioural pattern to not approach those you have an issue with?  Are you not sure how to approach the subject?  Working with a conflict coach can assist with identifying the conflict management skills you wish to enhance and prepare you to have a productive conversation with your colleague.

Conflict coaching is a one-on-one confidential service the Conflict and Complaint Management Service (CCMS) provides to anyone within the Defence Team. Each session is approximately one hour and the number of sessions is specific to the client’s needs.  Coaching is easily accessible as it can be conducted either in person or over the phone. Defence Team members looking to connect with a Conflict and Complaint Management Service (CCMS) agent may do so by visiting a local CCMS office or calling toll-free at 1-833-328-3351, M-F between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. EST. Additional details related to CCMS services are available on the CSS website

Sincerely,

CCMS Agent
